IUCN Protected Areas

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has declared seven different categories of protected areas. These areas are included in the World Database on Protected Areas, which can be found at www.wdpa.org. These areas are divided into 7 categories.Strict Nature ReserveAreas protected for their biodiversity and natural geographic features. Human visitation and use are controlled in these areas to ensure conservation.Wilderness AreaUnmodified or barely modified areas that maintain their original appearance within larger areas of human population.National ParkLarge natural or almost natural areas that have been protected to ensure normal ecological processes. The species living within these areas are also protected. These parks are popular tourist and educational attractions.Natural Monument or FeatureNatural monuments on land or sea set aside for protection. They may include living plants or animals. These are also popular tourist spots.Habitat/Species Management AreaSpecific species and habitats targeted for protection are included in this category. Many require regular attention by maintenance agencies.Protected Landscape/SeascapeThis category defines areas that are the result of human and natural interaction. This interaction must be continued in order to maintain the significance of the area.Protected area with sustainable use of natural resourcesThese areas are large ecosystems where a small amount has been set aside for resource management.
